Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between hemp and marijuana?

The cannabis plant family includes many different plant types, marijuana and hemp are just two of them. Marijuana is a bushy, short plant particularly loved for its sticky glands. These glands are called trichomes, and they produce THC, which is a psychotropic substance responsible for giving marijuana users a “stoned” feeling (also known as a high).
Aside from marijuana, there is also the amazing hemp plant. Hemp is the humble, less-known cousin of marijuana. Hemp can grow to be very tall and is used mostly for industrial purposes. The fibers of hemp trees are very tough, and the oil made from hemp plant has many uses. Its health benefits have been associated with the plant for centuries. Hemp oil contains 0% to max 2% THC, so it has no psychotropic effects. If hemp oil is made by the cold extraction process it has a higher quality. When extracted with CO2, hemp oil is generally healthier and contains more desirable compounds.

How does hemp oil work?

Hemp Oil activates the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in mammals. The ECS is involved in almost every system in you and your pet’s body – cardiovascular, digestion, relaxation, and even the cognitive and memory functions. The ECS is also a key factor in the mammalian body’s anti- inflammatory efforts. The ECS is controlled by receptors, which scientists call the CB1 and CB2 receptors. The active substances in hemp oil work directly with the ECS system by “antagonizing” the CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are one of the most abundant receptors in the brain and are found in almost every neuron in a mammal’s body. CB2 receptors are found almost exclusively in the immune system.

Does it work fast?

As with any herbal medicine, for most ailments you may not see an immediate effect. You’ll need to be patient. Your dog may feel some pain relief in a few hours but other symptoms like inflammation may take a few days to show improvement.

Are there any side effects?

With so many studies showing the health benefits of hemp, the most encouraging result is that hemp oil appears to be safe, even when taken in high doses and over extended periods of time. The possible side effects are mild and animals don’t appear to build up a tolerance. Most hemp oil for dogs and other pets is derived from industrial hemp, so it contains no or very small traces of THC. Canna Medis hemp oil is THC free! Because of this, all 50 states have approved the use of hemp-based ingredients for human and animal products. The most common side effect of hemp oil is that your dog may get a little drowsy. On rare occasions, side effects have included itchiness, mild vomiting or diarrhea, but these sensitivities are few and far between. If your dog reacts with these symptoms, you should stop giving him cannabis. Hemp oil has no known interactions with other medications, but it can cause the liver to process other drugs more slowly, so it’s important to inform the vet if you are administering it so they can correctly adjust your pet’s dose of any other drugs.
Pregnant and lactating pets should not consume hemp oil. If your pet has a serious disease you should consult a veterinarian before taking any new supplement.
