Throughout man's history hemp has been known as the most medicinal plant in the world

with many health promoting properties.

The results of using pure hemp oil supplements have been nothing short of amazing! Researchers are turning their attention to this herb more and more and, so far, they are finding there is lots to like. In one study 62% of pet owners claimed that hemp (CBD) oil works better than other medications or therapies. In this same study almost 90% of owners rated the products as very safe. Dog owners reported that the hemp products were very helpful in numerous areas. The areas felt to be positively impacted by the products were relief from pain, helping with sleep, relieving anxiety and even cure cancer. Keep reading to learn more.

Reduce anxiety and stress

Does your dog suffer from separation anxiety or noise phobias? Like us, dogs have anxieties and fears. A dog’s anxieties, may not be the same as our anxieties, but they cause stress and physical reactions just the same.

Hemp oil has been extensively studied for its effect on stress and anxiety. In humans, it has been found to:

  • Reduce anxiety caused by public speaking

  • Reduce anxiety in both healthy people and people with anxiety disorders

  • Be effective for panic disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders

Hemp oil has soothing and calming properties. It is extremely helpful in aiding pets situational anxiety as well. Situational anxiety is caused by certain activities, for example:

  • Lightning/Thunderstorms

  • Travel

  • Having company over

  • Fireworks

Strengthen the immune system

The immune system is the surveillance and defense system of the body. It recognizes foreign substances (those not belonging to the body, e.g., viruses, bacteria, pollen) by their molecular features and eliminates them from the body. The immune system can be divided into two parts based on how specific their functions are. These two divisions are called the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system.

Hemp is nutritious for many reasons. It has been regarded as a superfood due to its high essential fatty acid content and the unique ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 and Gamma-Linolenic acid (GLA) – 2:5:1. The omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids can not be produced by your pet and they need to be supplemented through their diet. Your pet needs a proper balance of these Omega oils to have a long and healthy life. Fatty acids are essential for immune modulation. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids also regulate intestinal flora, thus building a natural barrier against microbes and increasing the resilience of the body.

Endocannabinoids,  compounds that our bodies produce naturally, are derived from fatty acids. These endocannabinoids have several different functions. One of which is ensuring that there is balance in the immune system.

Hemp oil has also been found as a powerful antioxidant that’s shown to be more powerful than vitamins C and E. The main culprit for aging and diseases are the by-products of oxygenation from our cells. Hemp oil acts as an antioxidant, much like other superfoods, reversing the aging process and keeping our cells healthy and vibrant.

The other very important fat in hemp oil is the Gamma-Linoleic fatty acid. Hemp oil is known to contain up to 5% of pure GLA, a much higher concentration than any other plant, even higher than spirulina. While GLA is considered a conditionally essential fatty acid (which means that most dogs can make enough of it, most of the time), there are many circumstances (hard exercise or stress) where dogs can’t make enough GLA and supplementing can become important. Finally, because the GLA is perfectly balanced with Omega-3 fats, hemp oil will help reduce inflammation in your dog and strengthen the immune system.

Fight cancer

Cancer is the uncontrolled transformation of normal cells into abnormal ones, which usually form masses, invade nearby tissue and ultimately spread to other areas of the body. What causes cancer is still a mistery. Dogs can get many different types of cancer, each of which may show up with varying frequencies and degrees of severity. Many dogs with cancer get a lump somewhere on their body, which typically doesn’t seem to bother them. They may become weak, lethargic and easily fatigued, lose their appetite and lose weight, develop vomiting, diarrhea, enlarged lymph nodes, fever and lameness, and even collapse. Cancer is a leading cause of death in dogs, especially older dogs. Owners who think that their dog may have cancer should consult with a veterinarian right away. Early diagnosis always improves a dog’s chance of survival. Many treatment options are available if cancer is caught early.

Researchers at the American Cancer Society say there’s evidence that people with cancer, diabetes and skin allergies don’t make enough GLA … and these issues are incredibly common in dogs, too. We already explained the GLA in the previous section, so you probably understand the importance of this fatty acid by now. There are also other substances found in hemp that have been found to have an anti-tumor effect and have even been shown to stop cancer cells from growing and increased tumor cell death.

  • Actives in hemp help the immune system’s killer cells to cause cancer cell death.

  • They also kill cancer cells by blocking their ability to produce energy.

  • Hemp`s anti-tumor properties slow and inhibit glioma cell growth.

  • Hemp extracts can help increase the efficacy of conventional cancer treatment.

Reduce seizures and convulsions

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes dogs to have sudden, uncontrolled and recurring seizures. These physical attacks can come with or without a loss of consciousness. It’s estimated that up to 5% of dogs suffer from seizures. Most dogs with seizures are put on drugs such as phenobarbital and potassium bromide. While they may help control the seizures, they can be extremely harmful to your dog’s liver and other organs. And the drugs don’t work in all cases.

There is evidence that CBD can be helpful in controlling seizures, but it can have interactions with some epilepsy medications, so always consult a veterinarian if your pet is on epilepsy medication.

Hemp oil has also been shown to work well in drug-resistant epilepsy. In one study, 7 of 8 patients with epilepsy that was resistant to drugs saw a definite improvement within 4 to 5 months of taking this oil. Another survey of children with treatment-resistant epilepsy found that 84% of the children taking hemp oil had a reduction in the frequency of seizures.

Scientific research of hemp oil for pets

One of the first trials assessing the efficacy of hemp oil for canines is taking place at the Colorado State University, where Dr. Stephanie McGrath is leading the way in this research. Last November two clinical trials started measuring the effectiveness of hemp extracts in treating symptoms of epilepsy. The studies are conducted with a double-blind method which is considered the most reliable way. We can not share the results yet, but we trust they will confirm what many pet owners already know - hemp oil not only helps humans, but also pets with seizures.

Reduce chronic or acute pain

The most common condition vets have to deal with in older pet patients is chronic pain. When the source of that pain cannot be eliminated, effective pain relief can quite literally be a life-saver. A pet owner plays a major role in this effort to ease pet`s discomfort and pain. Not only must he learn to recognize the cues indicating pain or discomfort in his dog or cat, but also be more proactive in his effort.

There are several products that assist pain management, but as all medication they can have serious side effects. If you are looking for a natural solution, hemp oil is an excellent choice. The active components in hemp oil work so well for pain that scientists are considering it as a new class of drug for the treatment of chronic pain.

Studies show hemp oil to be very effective for:

  • Decreasing pain (including neuropathy and nerve-related pain)

  • Decreasing the impact of inflammation on oxidative stress (which causes degeneration and premature aging)

  • Decreasing inflammation in acute pancreatitis

  • Reducing other inflammation and pain

CBD oil is very effective in improving digestion. It can be used for acute or chronic digestive disorders. Hemp oil will calm the upset digestive tract and provide symptomatic care for your pet. It has been shown to help with:

  • nausea and vomiting

  • lack of appetite

  • intestinal inflammation

  • gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach tract)

  • fighting bacteria infection

  • lack of vitality and energy

Reduce inflammation & treat autoimmune disease

Just as people may suffer from bronchitis, colitis, arthritis, tonsillitis or a range of other inflammatory (or “itis”) conditions, so too can your dog. Inflammation is the body’s immune response to foreign substances, injuries or infection. It can also result from autoimmune diseases, in which the body triggers an inflammatory response when there aren’t any invaders to battle. Anytime you see inflammation, expect that your dog hurts. In addition, chronic inflammation can predispose your dog to certain diseases, even some types of cancer. And more evidence is compiling that chronic inflammation is far more common than we once thought.

Dog with anxiety pain cancer sizures epilepsy inflamation arthritis

There are several studies that prove the effectiveness of hemp oil in decreasing inflammation. Here are just a couple:

  • According to scientists from WTH Zurich and Bonn University, substances in hemp oil may help not only in stopping inflammation but also in preventing or treating ailments like liver cirrhosis, osteoarthritis or arteriosclerosis.

  • According to researchers at the Imperial College London, substances in hemp can reduce inflammation in mice by 50% at the right dosage and can fight against type 1 diabetes.

  • Research done by G.W.Pharmaceuticals showed that hemp could be used for treating rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, as well as diabetes, bowel disorders and nausea.

  • A study published in the Free radical biology & medicine journal by US researcher G.W. Booz from the University of Mississippi Medical Center showed that hemp oil could be helpful in lessening the impact of inflammation on oxidative stress, decreasing the risk of organ damage and dysfunction. Oxidative stress and inflammation contribute to some diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes type 1 and 2, atherosclerosis, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease and depression.

  • Scientists from the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda (US) showed that hemp oil could suppress inflammatory and neuropathic pain without causing analgesic tolerance.

Protect the nervous system

The nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and several different kinds of nerves that are found throughout the body. These create complex circuits through which animals experience and respond to sensations. A healthy, functional nervous system is very important in dogs to perform motor and cognitive activities to respond to stimuli and commands that their owners give them. Neurological disorders in dogs can be scary, as they come on suddenly, leaving you feeling helpless. It's important for you to recognize the signs of canine neurological disorders to properly care for your pooch and get back to pet business as usual.

The “magic” of hemp treatments that both upregulate and downregulate neural transmissions is that they always act to move the body toward a normal state and therefore don’t shift things in the wrong direction as medications sometimes do.

Studies have shown that cannabis has the ability to:

  • Reduce damage to the brain and nervous system

  • Encourage the growth and development of new neurons

  • Protect against damage caused by oxidative stress and improve recovery

  • Slow the progression of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

  • Reduce the number and severity of debilitating epileptic seizures

  • Reduce muscle spasms experienced by those with multiple sclerosis (MS)

  • Provide anxiety relief and reduce nightmares for those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Minimize neurological damage following spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries

  • Protect the brain from cell death caused by free radicals and toxins

Improve cardiovascular system

The cardiovascular system includes the heart and blood vessels and performs the function of pumping and carrying blood to the rest of the body. The blood contains nutrients and oxygen to provide energy to allow the cells of the body to perform work. Cardiovascular disease is a catchall term for the entire class of diseases that affect the blood vessels and especially the heart. If left untreated, cardiovascular disease can lead to heart failure in dogs and cats, which makes it very important for pet owners to educate themselves on both the causes and warning signs of cardiovascular disease.

Just as veterinarian Dr. Bassingthwaighte discovered, hemp oil has been linked to heart health. Studies show it can:

  • Reduce the damage from damaged blood vessels and irregular heart rates,

  • Protect blood vessels from damage and dilate the arteries

  • Reduce heart rate and blood pressure associated with stress and anxiety

  • Protect against the vascular damage caused by a high glucose environment, inflammation or the induction of type 2 diabetes

  • Have an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effect

  • Reduce infarct size and increase blood flow

  • Influence the survival and death of white blood cells, white blood cell migration and platelet aggregation

  • Lower the risk of heart attack and stroke

  • Reduce blood sugar levels

Help arthritis

Many pets develop some form of joint disease during their lives. About one in five dogs develop arthritis as they get older. It can be mild, even unnoticeable to the pet owner, or it can be debilitating, severely affecting the pet's quality of life, or even causing complete lameness. The majority of cases fall somewhere in between. While some pets may develop joint disease in the first half of their lives, signs usually do not appear until the latter half of life, which varies depending on your pet's breed. Dogs are more susceptible to arthritis than cats, and the larger dog breeds are more vulnerable than smaller breeds.

Researchers in the Journal of Arthritis and Rheumatology found that the GLA found in hemp seeds reduced arthritis symptoms by 25% compared to the placebo at 4%. Once again, this is because the perfect balance of fatty acids helps to reduce inflammation naturally. It can alleviate joint pains and have your pets moving around again. The active compound in hemp oil is a potent pain reliever that doesn’t just mask the pain, but it helps soothe chronic inflammation that prevents the body from healing properly.

Improve skin & coat

Dry, dull coat. Incessant scratching and chewing. Sound familiar? Dog skin problems are often the most common presenting complaints at the veterinarian, accounting for almost a quarter of the office visits a clinician sees on a typical day.

Dog with anxiety pain cancer sizures epilepsy inflamation arthritis

Hemp oil has long been used in cosmetic products and soaps because the oil can penetrate the inner layers of the skin and promote healthy cellular growth. The balanced fatty acids also play an important role in reducing the inflammation associated with common skin issues. As an anti-inflammatory, hemp oil can relieve systemic inflammation that causes hives, blisters and whole-body itching. This unrefined organic superfood can thicken the fur texture, keep the skin less shedding and prevent putting out dog dandruff. There are a lot of oil products for dogs that have industrial hemp oil as a key ingredient, but 100% pure extract works best

Fight bacterial infection

Bacteria are single cell organisms that reproduce by dividing. There are good and harmful bacteria. Good bacteria can benefit your health and the environment, while harmful bacteria cause illness and infection. Pets just like humans often develop bacterial infections, and if left untreated these infections can lead to more severe health complications.

Active substances in hemp oil are very potent against bacteria.  Thanks to the research made by British and Italian researchers, it has now been proven that hemp oil has a built-in capacity to fight against drug-resistant bacteria and is, therefore, highly effective as a cure for such infections.

It has been further elaborated that hemp oil has to be applied topically to get the most out of it. These antimicrobial defenses as offered by hemp actives are highly effective and specific in killing the bacteria and curing the consequently produced infection.

In fact hemp oil turned out to be much more effective than many other drugs that are available in the pharmacies. This has now been claimed for the very purpose of Cannabis in nature by the scientists.

Promote bone growth

Bone disorders in dogs can be developmental, infectious, nutritional, or due to bone tumors, trauma, or unknown causes.

  • Developmental bone disorders appear in young animals when the bones do not grow correctly. Some of the more common causes include hereditary breed characteristics and dietary imbalances.

  • An example of an infectious disorder is Osteomyelitis, which is inflammation of the bone.

  • Reduced bone mass, bone deformities, bony growths, fractures, and loose teeth (rubber jaw) are all conditions that can result from nutritional disturbances.

  • Pets can also develop skeletal tumors.

  • Another bone disorder in pets are the bone fractures, which are often caused by car accidents, firearms, fights, or falls.

Dog with anxiety pain cancer sizures epilepsy inflamation arthritis

Compounds in the cannabis plant may help prevent bone diseases and even make them stronger after fracture. Diseases like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis are painful and debilitating. Osteoporosis can make bones so brittle that they break even after a soft fall. Research conducted over the past several years has found that hemp oil may be a potent therapeutic agent for protecting against painful bone diseases, arthritis, and injury.

The researchers found that CB receptors can trigger bone formation and strengthen the bridge that connects broken bones. The results of the experiment were pretty amazing. Active components in hemp oil speed up the body’s self-healing mechanisms.  The scientists found that bones of rats treated with hemp oil alone not only healed faster but the previous fracture was less likely to break in the future because of a strengthened fracture callus. The study estimated that the treated bone is 35-50% stronger than a non-treated bone.

Supress muscle spasms

Muscle spasms are localized twitches that result from overexertion, neurological damage, or a physical injury. Though spasms are not dangerous in and of themselves, they can be painful, especially if they are sustained for a long period. They may also be an indication of a more serious condition, such as a pinched nerve, a slipped disc, or muscle damage. Muscle spasms are typically detectable as tremors beneath the skin, but your dog may exhibit additional symptoms depending on the injury’s origins and extent, including: lameness, depression or pain. A visit to the veterinarian is usually recommended for a proper diagnosis both of the spasm and of the underlying cause.

Studies have found that hemp oil does work for treating muscle spasms. Several studies have concluded that muscle spasms stopped, reduced or became manageable with the use of hemp oil.

A multinational clinical study took place studying cannabis’ effect on Multiple Sclerosis, which can be compared to  Degenerative Myelopathy in dogs. After 12 weeks of treatment, patients said their spasms reduced significantly. Patients that were given a placebo did not achieve the same level of relief. After 16-weeks, patients reported an improved quality of life.

Another study showed success in 2/3 of participants after 50 weeks of treatment with hemp oil.
